Binghamton University, through The Dormitory Authority of the State of New York retained Delta Engineers to transform an existing 140,000 square foot office building into a state-of-the-art research facility. The building was renovated to support campus Bioengineering department, Center for Protein Dynamics department, generic labs with flexibility to support research grant development, incubator offices and the Division of Research. Delta Engineers provided all structural, fire protection and plumbing design services.
Delta Engineers provided full project design and construction administration services. As the Prime consultant for the Dormitory Authority, Delta provided project management, Structural design, Fire Protection, Plumbing and Special system design services. Project management services included coordinating the efforts of four sub consultants to complete the design process within a 15 week design window.
This project involved transforming over 140,000 square feet of the building into offices and other support facilities for Binghamton University. After the renovation, the building houses Bioengineering, the Center for Protein Dynamics, Generic Labs, Incubator Offices and the Division of Research. To accomplish this design project meetings were scheduled in Binghamton, NY, Albany NY and Boston MA. The team communicated on a daily basis to aggressively address the design issues and to coordinate the desired flexibility of the building infrastructure to accommodate undefined research possibility. The design included structural steel enhancements and floor infill to address vibration issues, full replacement of the HVAC system, full replacement of the electrical system, emergency generator upgrade, full replacement of the plumbing system, wet fire suppression system through the office and support areas of the building, double locked pre-action fire suppression system to support the laboratory areas, Camera security, Card access system, and a complete DDC control replacement system. Plumbing system upgrades included central compressed air system, an ultra high pure nitrogen system, central chemical dilution station, and RO water treatment system for building humidification.
