This project involves the lowering of two major city streets under three railroad bridges. The roadways will be lowered approximately 18" under the existing railroad bridges to provide the minimum required vertical clearance, and thereby eliminate the numerous accidents that occur when trucks strike the railroad bridges. Given that this project's location is at a"gateway" to downtown Binghamton, aesthetic improvements and pedestrian amenities such as ornamental lighting, railing, crosswalks, benches, and audible pedestrian signals are being incorporated into the project. Work tasks include preliminary and final highway design, environmental documentation, public participation, landscaping design, and construction support services. This is a locally managed federally funded "pass-thru" project which mandates adherence to NYSDOT design procedures and criteria.
