Child Care Center Design Services

The Corning Children’s Center is a nationally accredited child care program funded in part by Corning, Incorporated. Founded in 1980, the facility can handle up to 194 children between the ages of newborn to 12 years old. The steel framed building has a combination flat and "butterfly" roof. This project involved the construction of a new 25,000 square foot, seven million dollar child care facility. The project included the design of classrooms, bathrooms, a central kitchen area, administrative offices, a staff lounge, and utility rooms. Delta also designed the landscaping, offering a carefree, safe environment for children to play on which requires minimal upkeep.

Fire protection services included the design of a wet-pipe sprinkler system that was installed throughout this facility. An HVAC system was designed, incorporating three (3), 1,000,000 Btuh high-efficiency, condensing hot water boilers, air handlers with direct expansion cooling coils, and natural gas heating with variable air duct system. The mechanical system involved providing a hydronic heating system which would provide hot water to variable air volume boxes as well as a radiant floor system in the toddler spaces. Provisions were made to include an additional boiler if expansion occurs. In addition to the boiler, hot water pumps, hydronic piping, and all trim accessories associated with a hydronic system were provided. These condensed boilers each have individual air intakes and exhausts, eliminating the requirement for combustion air louvers and dampers which would not have fit on the limited amount of exterior wall in the mechanical room.

Lighting, fire alarm, security, telephone and data services were also provided. The environmental aspects of this project included the development of a Storm Water Pollution Prevent Plan (SWPPP), stormwater mitigation, hydrology, and sediment and erosion control measures. Site/Civil services were provided for the parking lot, sidewalks, and site lighting. Coordination with the Client, NYSEG and the City of Corning was required for the site utility work. Utilities included water, gas, sanitary, storm and electric connections. This project was designed to achieve LEED registration using standards in accordance with USGBC guidelines.
